After twenty-three seconds, Simon still hasn’t looked at him.

Markus steps away. He knew this could happen. That doesn’t make it any easier.

“Forgive me. I shouldn’t have —”

Finally, Simon raises his head. But the emotion he shows is anger, not sadness.

“How could you,” he rasps. “How could you make me wait all this time! I thought — I was sure you didn’t even —”

He winces and covers his eyes with his hand.

Oh, thank god.

“I’m sorry,” Markus whispers. “I’m an idiot. Can you ever forgive me?”

“No,” Simon says. But Markus knows he is lying.
