I loved this take on the idea of Connor as a domestic android. The twist of having Cole be the one to purchase Connor instead of Hank was a nice touch that affected the whole story, and the gradual growth of Connor's and Cole's relationship as well as Connor's and Hank's relationship was delightful. I liked the fact that the events of the revolution were there, but not so much that they ate the rest of the story. Also, very nice job what my friend and I called "side-shadowing" - that is, referencing original canon in an AU without being too heavy handed about it. There were a lot of great sideshadow touches.

P.S. I've been putting up a lot of Hank/Con recs because that's what I've been reading, but I'd love to see some for other pairings!

In the future, Detroit has been completely hollowed out as life there grew further towards the suburbs. No one lives in the city center anymore, buildings standing vacant, pieces of decades past left untouched for years.

It’s night and Hank’s too drunk to drive but he’s driving anyway, the opposite direction of where he needs to be going, to these dark, old parts of the city. He passes the last functioning streetlight into a half darkness, the moon illuminating the ice on the road that his headlights can’t reach. He swerves off the road, smashing into a tree growing through a gap in the concrete, stumbles out into the rain, and falls to his knees, too sick of himself to stand.

He thinks he’ll just lay there, let the rain freeze over him in the dark . . . except he sees a light at the end of the road. He pulls himself up and stumbles towards it, curious why there would be a light so deep in the city. He finds a window glowing from the front of an old factory building, white paint peeling off of brick, except the longer he looks at it, the more the building seems wrong, nicer than a factory, closer to a large townhouse maybe.

I just read this fancomic over on AO3 and it's excellent!  I couldn't stop reading once I started.  The artist does a great job of imagining the events of the game after one important twist.

So I participated as an artist in the Hankcon Big Bang that's been posting this week, and I thought I'd share what I've been working on here!

Hey folks!  Sorry to drop off the face of the earth for awhile there.  I've been really exhausted this month.

I'd like to make up for it by sharing this really EXCELLENT HankCon video with you all!

Apparently this is loosely based on a fanfic.  I can't speak to the quality of the story, as it's yet unfinished and I've been trying not to read unfinished works (I can hardly keep up with the finished ones!  I feel so lucky to be part of this fandom!)  However, I've been OBSESSED with this video for the past couple of days, I just keep re-watching it.  It's excellent!

Check it out and give the maker some love!

Title: it's anchored to my racing mind (maybe you can slow its stride)
Ship: Hank/Con
Rated: Teen (There's an explicit sequel, but you can enjoy it without it)
Words: 73,648 words

In my last rec I talked about wanting to see Connor deal with the guilt of having been the Deviant Hunter.

Be careful what you wish for, folks!

This story takes us on a journey through Connor's and Hank's issues, both of which are heavily informed by the author's own journey with moral OCD.  Connor must deal with extremely negative emotions, in the form of (among other things) a banner projected across his view which literally tells him things like "YOU ARE NOT GOOD" and "YOU CANNOT BE FORGIVEN".

I won't lie, it's not always an easy read.  I ended up with tears stinging my eyes after reading some of the chapters (not full on gross sobbing, just a little sting).  But the author always brings it back around to something happy and positive, which I really, really loved.  They balance awful things with healing in a really excellent way.  There's real hope underlying everything, even when things are extremely dark.  They talk about their own personal philosophy in the notes, and it's one I can really get behind.

Mind the tags, and know that there is suicidal ideation on both Connor's and Hank's parts in this, as well as a LOT of negative self-talk.  But if you can make it through that, you are in for a well-written, emotional journey that's very much worth taking.

Pressure by Iocane
Ship: Hank/Con
Rated: Mature
Words: 20,226

For a long time I've been wanting to read a story where Connor has to deal with the guilt associated with being the Deviant Hunter.  This story deals with that idea in a gentle yet plausible way.  The main focus of the story is Hank and Connor's slowly developing relationship, but intertwined with that is Connor finding himself and his place in android society.  There's a good strong dollop of hurt/comfort and lots of kissing and cuddling.  My favorite aspect of the story is the use of Connor's sense of "cold" and "warm" as associations with what he's feeling.  For example, he notes that he feels "warmer" when wearing Hank's clothes than other clothes, even though they don't seem to affect his internal temperature sensors.  It's a lovely and relatable touch.

Highly recommended for when you need something warm.

I wrote a Fairy Tale Fusion for the Thirium Wonderland Secret Santa Exchange.  It's a style I've never tried before, but overall I think it turned out pretty well.  (And long.  Ridiculously long.)

There is a Middleaged ships comment ficathon over here.  According to the organizers, "As for the ship ages there is no upper limit so characters 65+ are definitely included. As for the lower age limit, I put 40+ in the rules, but this is not a strict rule, if one half of your ship is in their thirties go ahead and post them. The whole point of this ficathon is to encourage the creation of fanworks for mature adult pairings. I find in a lot of fandoms the teenagers and characters in their early twenties get most of the love, and in turn most of the fanworks are written about them, I am hoping to change that."

It's a little tricky with androids, but since Connor is played by a 30-year-old man, Hank/Con is probably fine.  HankVin certainly is, since Gavin is 36 at the time of the game.  Honestly, I suspect that Hank/almost anyone in the game would be welcome.

Welp, I'm new to the fandom and haven't started a long form project in a while (and Tumblr is deader every day)...so lets try some shameless self promotion over here!

If/Then Chapter 1: Wire Frames

In which Good-Ending Connor's runaway predictive abilities cause him to start hallucinating the Bad Endings

Pairing: Hank/Connor

Rating: Explicit

Words: 7,000

Summary:

Would you, could you, did you: those are human questions, feeling questions, androids aren’t supposed to think like that. His processors aren’t built to question, they’re built to predict. To permute. If X, then Y. If Y then Z. If the probability of X is 0.72 and the probability of Y is 0.33 then the probability of Z…if, then, if, then, a hundred million times a second until the numbers cease to be numbers and become the golden wire frames of possibility sketched out across a thousand branching futures.

Connor thinks he got the happy ending, but there are so many other ways it could have gone. And when your mind is a computer built to predict possible outcomes…it can be hard to tell the difference between what did happen, and what could have happened, if something had gone a little different.

Excerpt:

“ Spare me.” Hank reaches for the creamer on top of the refrigerator, and has to switch arms with a hiss and a wince as his sore shoulder protests the reach. There’s a flicker of red in his peripheral vision.

“Still sore?” Connor asks softly. Hank winces and nods, rubbing at his shoulder. He waits for the flutter of eyelashes that means Connor’s scanning him, for new inflamation, new tears, new swelling…but it doesn’t come. Instead, Connor looks away, curling in on himself like he does when he’s cold.

“I’m sorry,” Connor says, barely audible. “I should have been faster…I…” he touches his fingertips to his temple, and there it is again. His LED goes dark for a second, and then stutters awkwardly to life, little blocks of red-yellow-blue blinking on and off, jagged and patternless. “The target escaped, I should have been–”

“Connor?”

“Your chance of survival was 89 percent,” Connor says, and the cadence of his voice is changing, flat and faster than a human’s. “If your chance of survival is 89 percent then I should have maintained focus on the target, the target should not have escaped. I should have left–” he looked up at Hank, eyes skittering across his face without really seeing him.

“I should have left you hanging. I didn’t–”

“You didn’t leave me,” Hank says softly, soothingly, trying to keep a lid on his rising alarm. He squeezes Connor’s shoulder gently, feeling the tension vibrating through his frame.

“I’m sorry-” Connor says again, and then he blinks, and his LED swirls back to yellow, then to blue, smooth and bright again.

“You okay?” Hank asks, searching his face, and Connor gives him a tired smile.

“Bad dreams,” he says, hops off the counter and straightens his tie. “We should leave now if we want to be on time for the meeting.

Tagging is very different on Dreamwidth than tumblr.  I know, I know, you love your tags!  However, this comm is limited to 1000 tags and no more (and even if I paid to upgrade it, it would still be limited) so sadly tumblr-style tags aren't an option.  There are many other ways to express yourselves on posts, though!

If you'd like a particular tag added to the ones available for use at the comm, please comment here!  I've tried to add the most popular ship and smush names, but I know there are many more.  You can see all tags currently in use at the comm by going here: https://detroitbecomehuman.dreamwidth.org/tag/ and scrolling down.
